Chromium compounds in Leather Supplies Directory

Chromium compounds are the most important of the mineral-tanning agents. This is due to the special properties connected with the molecular structure of chromium, which enables trivalent chromium salts to form stable, basic aggregates soluble in water. These aggregates have a strong complex affinity for the hide substance. Chromium appears in its compounds in variously “charged states,” also called valences. Compounds, capable of tanning, are derived exclusively from trivalent chromium salts. Hexavalent chromium salts are used in the two-bath process, but they do not have a tanning effect until they are reduced (second bath) to a trivalent state.
