Borge Garveri in Leather Supplies Directory

Borge Garveri AS was founded circa 1870 by Ola J Borge. Ola was a farmer and as was common at the time he tanned some hides for his own use. He must have been good at this for he soon built a tannery by a lake close to the farm. Here he tanned until 1889 when he moved to a new building by the side of a fjord in Lonevag, 30 km from Bergen and founded the Borge company. The company has a long history of technical innovation and creativity. In the early days, the tannery produced vegetable tanned sole leathers but was one of the first in Norway to adopt the new chrome tanning process and start making leathers for shoe uppers. Borge was also one of the first Norwegian tanners to export products. Early exports were to Sweden but other markets soon followed and today it accounts for 97% of all production. The tannery is still owned and run by the Borge family.
